Description

The BQ725 (TI BQ24725) is a high-efficiency, synchronous charger / charge-controller designed for multi-cell battery packs in notebooks, portable systems, etc. It uses N-channel MOSFETs driven via internal charge pumps and provides precise control over charging via SMBus commands.

Functionality & Architecture

  • Operates as a synchronous NMOS‑NMOS buck converter with programmable switching frequency (three options: 615 kHz, 750 kHz, 885 kHz).

  • Uses internal charge pumps to drive external MOSFETs (ACFET, RBFET, BATFET) to handle system power path switching (adapter vs battery).

  • Supports 2, 3, or 4 series Li+ cells.

  • Charging behavior (voltage, current, input current limit) is controlled through DACs accessible over SMBus.

  • Provides a hardware ILIM pin for real-time current limiting (the lower of ILIM‑based and DAC‑based limit is enforced).

  • Has built-in protections:

    • Over‑voltage, over‑current

    • MOSFET or inductor short detection

    • Thermal shutdown

    • Input current over‑limit (ACOC)

  • Features a soft-start mechanism each time charging begins to avoid surge or overshoot.

  • Low “off‑state” battery discharge current (on the order of a few microamps) when charger is inactive.

  • Adjustable “learn” cycle (battery discharge/charge to calibrate capacity) via SMBus.

  • Programmable features (via SMBus) for thresholds, timers, deglitch settings, switching frequency adjustment, and fault behavior.

  • Thermal protection: when junction temperature exceeds ~155 °C, charging is disabled until cooled (~135 °C).

  • Available in a 20‑pin QFN (3.5 × 3.5 mm) package.

Typical Performance / Electrical Characteristics

  • Charge voltage regulation range: ~1.024 V to ~19.200 V in steps of ~16 mV.

  • Charge current range (with typical current sense resistor): from ~128 mA up to ~8.128 A, with 64 mA steps.

  • Input adapter operating voltage range: typically ~9 V to ~24 V.

  • Quiescent currents: in off / standby states very low; in switching / active states dependent on mode and loads.
